time 100 most influential 2020

Only one Canadian made it on Time's Most Influential People of 2020 list

Time's Most Influential People of 2020 list is officially here and Toronto's very own The Weeknd has made the cut.

Holding down the fort as the only Canadian on the list this year, The Weeknd, born Abel Makkonen Tesfaye, finds his spot in the Artists category with the likes of Ali Wong, Michael B. Jordan, Selena Gomez, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and Jennifer Hudson

The Time listing included praise from a music icon who had nothing but love for the Canadian singer.

"He’s a mysterious figure in an era when mystery is rare in pop. And you never know what to expect next. He plays with personae in his music and presentation," wrote the one and only Elton John.

"He has so many different types of music tucked up his sleeve that he incorporates into his vision. He’s not interested in commerciality for commerciality’s sake, but he’s one of the biggest-streaming artists on Spotify. Like Prince, he marches to his own beat. That’s an exemplary way for an artist to be."

Tesfaye's Canadian fans have taken to social media to show their love and support.

"Congratulations ⁦@theweeknd⁩ !! You make us proud!" a fan wrote.

This isn't the first time The Weeknd has been featured in Time. Back in 2018, he also made their list of Next Generation Leaders.

In addition to the Time list, The Weeknd also just scored some 2020 Billboard Music Award Nominations including top R&B; artist, top R&B; male artist and his song Heartless was nominated for top R&B; song.
