Students will need to start buckling up, because seatbelts are being added to school buses in two Canadian cities.

On Friday, Transport Canada announced that it will debut seatbelts in Sudbury, Ont., and somewhere in British Columbia as part of a new pilot project aimed at improving school bus safety.

More than 50,000 school buses are utilized across Canada every day.

The B.C. location has yet to be determined.

"School buses continue to be the safest means of transporting children to and from school in Canada, but if there is an opportunity for improvement, we will explore all options," said Minister of Transport Marc Garneau of the move.

The federal government said that it would be open to partnering with other jurisdictions, should they express interest in participating in the seatbelt pilot.
