Service Canada will be opening up to 90 locations across the country for in-person service beginning Wednesday, according to a press release from the government.

The agency closed all in-person services in late March and redirected customers to the eServiceCanada portal throughout the pandemic.

Now, Service Canada locations will reopen with a number of new health and safety measures in place, including reduced seating, physical distancing signage and barriers at service counters.

Visitors are also strongly encouraged to use face masks and hand sanitizer before they enter the office.

Not all services will be immediately available, however; Service Canada will begin by only processing applications for:

• Social Insurance Numbers
• Employment Insurance benefits
• Canada Pension Plan and Old Age Security benefits
• Passports for essential travel

Passport and biometrics services will resume at a later date.

Minister of Families, Children and Social Development Ahmed Hussen said that the safety of Canadians remains paramount.

"As we reopen in-person Service Canada Centres, safely serving Canadians will remain our top priority," Hussen said in the release.

"The return of in–person public access to Service Canada offices will build on the new services ‎that were implemented and will continue to provide convenient support to those clients who need assistance in accessing our benefits and services."
