Trudeau ranks second among world leaders for popularity gains during COVID

While the WE Charity scandal left Prime Minister Trudeau with slumping approval ratings during the last few months, his handling of the pandemic has impacted public perception — particularly compared to other world leaders.

About a month ago, an Angus Reid survey revealed Trudeau’s approval rating had dropped from 55 per cent in May to 44 per cent as of July 23.

Although his approval dropped, overall Trudeau ranks second in the world for job approval gains since the pandemic started, according to data gathered from Morning Consult, a global data intelligence company.

trudeau newsTrudeau’s approval rating has increased by 14 percentage points from March 1 to Aug. 18 this year. But Australia Prime Minister Scott Morrison saw the biggest jump — an increase of 29 percentage points from 33 to 62 in the same time period.

The increase in approval rankings could be attributed to low ratings just before the pandemic.

Public opinion of Morrison nose-dived when he took a secret holiday to Hawaii while Australia fires raged earlier in the year. Morrison’s jump in approval is credited to his handling of the pandemic, according to The Conversation.

Trudeau, too, has had his fair share of ups and downs. Before the pandemic hit, his popularity dipped over the handling of the Wet’suwet’en Nation blockades. Before the WE Charity scandal, Trudeau’s ethics have been called to question for his holiday on the Aga Khan’s private island and the SNC-Lavalin affair. Not to mention the blackface racist photos of Trudeau revealed before the last election.

Despite all the scandals, Trudeau is faring much better than leaders around the globe.

U.S. President Donald Trump’s approval dropped by two percentage points, Britain’s Boris Johnson is down four, and Brazil President Jair Bolsonaro is down six percentage points in the March 1 to Aug. 18 time period.
