Health Canada approved a COVID-19 testing device that delivers results in 90 minutes

Canada has just approved a new COVID-19 testing device that can produce results in just 90 minutes.

On Friday, Health Canada gave the Hyris bCUBE, a portable medical device, the OK for human COVID-19 testing. The device is a mobile, DNA-testing laboratory in a box that can offer testing wherever and whenever. It can even be controlled with a smartphone.

The cube, distributed by Songbird Life Science, had previously been used for surface testing. Now, clinical trials have shown that its PCR (polymerase chain reaction) can provide a 95 per cent accuracy rate.

"We have validated the bCUBE after using it for several years in the food and natural products industry to identify pathogens, microbes, animal and botanical species ingredients," said Dr. Steven Newmaster, a University of Guelph genomics professor, in a news release.

The device is capable of analyzing different types of samples, including nasal swabs and saliva.

"Health Canada's approval of the Hyris bCUBE addresses big gaps in testing capability and accessibility for Canadians," added Deleo de Leonardis, co-founder of Songbird Life Science in the press release.
